The Leaders

The Children of the Corn movies are based off of the short story, Children of the Corn by Stephen King, which appeared in Night Shift.

The leaders are basically the giver of He Who Walks Behind the Rows’ word, which is the God they worship, the devil. Some of the leaders were possessed by the god himself, while others saw him in visions, dreams, and other ways. The leaders of the children basically want to rid the place of adults. Isaac the first leader, convinced the children to murder all the adults in town, their parents included. The adults are seen as being impure, and sinners. They harvest corn which is where their god is, behind the rows [of corn] The children perform sacrifices to satisfy the lord. The sacrifices are basically any adult who gets in their way or tries to ruin what they have. And also the children who have come of age. Children, in their eyes, are born pure, free from sin, and innocent. The children are very easily influenced, and easily molded as well, which is understandable. This also makes it easier for the leaders and He Who Walks Behind the Rows to control the children and influence them to do what they want them to. This can also be useful since a big portion of adults probably aren’t going to find a nine year old, or an innocent looking child threatening at all. This series is very interesting to me, it definitely makes me think on a number of levels.

The children are often referred to as the ‘eyes and the ears of the world’ and corn have ‘eyes and ears’ so I believe it’s a pretty appropriate name.

I suppose a lot of people would see the children and He Who Walks Behind the Rows as being the bad guys, but it all depends on the way you look at it. There is truth in what they say about the sin and their world being evil. They’re trying to take back the land, the world that has been abused/abandoned and regain innocence. Maybe not to such extremities, but none the less they mean well. A lot of the adults or outlanders destroy things and/or demonstrate things they preach against. A lot of people are guilty of being hypocritical so it’s a point well taken. I believe there’s a good lesson behind it. I love the stories very much and boy do they make me think.

I became a fan a very long time ago. Every time I'd go to the store when I was a little kid I'd always wonder to the video isle, The Children of the Corn tapes always caught my attention. It's strange but that was when I basically became hooked. :P I couldn't stop thinking about it. Thankfully, I at least now own the DVDs and no longer stalk the video section. The leaders really caught my interest because they are all very powerful in their own ways. I find it really amazing how influential one can be. They all have their strengths, as well as their weaknesses. They're all very interesting characters, and I love them!
