Peter Pettigrew was first introduced in Sorcerer's Stone, as Scabbers. He was discovered to be Peter Pettigrew/Wormtail in Prisoner of Azkaban. He was missing in action in most of Order of the Phoenix, possibly recruiting Voldemort allies and spying? Voldemort mentioned recruiting their natural allies, Dementors, as well as the banished giants. Hagrid tried persuading them, perhaps Wormtail went to as well.

School life

Peter Pettigrew was born in 1960, so he would be 35 years of age or so in the fifth book. He attented Hogwarts and was sorted into Gryffindor a long with his other school friends Sirius Black, James Potter, and Remus Lupin. He always tagged along with them and idolized them. He became an animagus with their help. The animal he turns into is a rat. His nickname is Wormtail (Wormtail since a rat's tail has the appearance of a worm). Along with James, Sirius, and Remus they were known as The Marauders.

He’s resourceful as Slytherins are, cunning, and willing to do anything to get what he wants, and he has shown that. Perhaps h he will show some qualities of a Gryffindor.. We saw him in the beginning of Goblet of Fire desperately trying to get Voldemort to use somebody else, instead of Harry, so he could repay his debt to him and he did it in a sneaky way to try and, I guess you could say, fool the Dark Lord into thinking that his concerns were only for him, not for Potter. I think he will end up playing a key part. He’s a sneaky fellow, and his number one concern is himself, being safe, surviving. I could see him repaying his debt to Harry, but to be honest I’d rather him not. Severus Snape's life was saved once by James Potter, in return Snape saved harry's life during the Quidditch match. He was repaying his debt. As Dumbledore said, 'Pettigrew owes his life to you. You have sent Voldemort a deputy who is in your debt...When one wizard saves another wizard's life, it creates a certain bond between them... and I'm much mistaken if Voldemort wants his servant in the debt of Harry Potter. This is magic at its deepest, its most impenetrable, Harry. But trust me... the time may come when you will be very glad you saved Pettigrew's life.' But a house is just a house as well as a family is just a family. You can’t take one individual and assume they’re all going to possess the same qualities. (For example The Black Family, Sirius and Tonks are an exception of the reputation the Black’s have.) It all depends on his choices.

Secret keeper

Sirius Black was going to be The Potter’s secret keeper. The secret keeper knew where The Potters were hiding. They had to hide because of Voldemort. Since James Potter was no longer the strongest and could no longer protect him from Voldemort he aligned himself with the Dark Lord and told him where the Potters were hiding. Every one else thought Sirius was the secret keeper even though Sirius decided to give it to Peter instead. I feel that was an intelligent plan on his part, and it worked out the way it was supposed to.

Peter Pettigrew is alive

In Harry’s third year Ron gave him a Sneakoscope which tells you when there’s a sneak/liar around you. It went off one time, they didn’t take it serious. Scabbers was there at that time, so it obviously worked. Hermione’s cat Crookshanks, who is part Kneazle has the ability to detect unsavoury or suspicious characters, and knew that Scabbers was deceitful. Sirius in dog form convinced Crookshanks to help him. Crookshanks tried going after Scabbers many times. Ron said it himself that Crookshanks had it out for Scabbers, Hermione insisted that’s what cats do. Ron was correct. Lupin knew Wormtail wasn’t dead like he thought he was when Wormtail was on the Marauder’s Map. He also now knew that Sirius wasn’t guilty and together they revealed Scabbers as being Wormtail/Peter Pettigrew. They were going to kill him, but Harry stopped them and during a bunch of commotion he escaped in his Animagus form. Professor Trelawny made a real prediction that night, something she has done only one other time, though unaware of it. She said servant would once again be reunited with master.

He seeks protection after those most powerful. James and Sirius may have been the strongest at Hogwarts but outside the well-protected school lied danger, so he became a servant/Death Eater to The Dark Lord, Lord Voldemort. Voldemort sees through Wormtail and tells him in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, ‘Your devotion is nothing more than cowardice. You would not be here if you had anywhere else to go.' He used to be in the original Order of the Phoenix, but then changed sides after Voldemort gained more power. Peter Pettigrew has been like this his whole life. His main concern is most definitely himself. Which can be a good thing. In the end you only have yourself. But even Voldemort has to admit his surprise of how useful Peter turned out to be. He was the one that found Voldemort. He had to milk Nagini (Voldemort's snake) for her venom and give Voldemort regular feedings. He also made the potion to return Voldemort to a body. He used bones of Voldemort’s father (bone of the father, unknowingly given, you will renew your son), cut off his own right hand (flesh of the servant, willingly given, you will revive your master.), then cut Harry’s arm (blood of the enemy, forcibly taken, you will resurrect your foe.) He also was able to convince Bertha Jorkins, a witch who worked for the Ministry of magic to accompany him on a midnight stroll. Voldemort was very surprised and never expected this out of Wormtail He could have easily been found out, but instead he overpowered Bertha and brought her to Voldemort. She helped out more than Voldemort could ever imagine, she told him all he needed to know about the Triwizard tournament and that she knew of a faithful Death Eater that would be only too willingly to help him. He also killed Cedric Diggory with no question at all, as well as all the 12 Muggles that he framed Sirius Black for. He cut his finger off in the process of murdering them and he was given award as well. He was considered a hero. Everyone assumed Sirius killed all the Muggles as well as Peter Pettigrew. His plan was very successful indeed. It’s pretty safe to assume no one expected this out of Peter Pettigrew. He wasn’t that skilled after all, just a follower. Wormtail, for helping Voldemort was rewarded with a silver arm, that crushed a small twig into powder.

He has skills in the dark arts, no doubt. Not everyone can kill, as Bellatrix Lestrange told Harry, you need to mean to cause pain. Then again I doubt Wormtail, hated Cedric. I think you can fool your mind. Desperate times, call for desperate measures eh? He performed the Avada Kedavra curse successfully on Cedric Diggory, using Voldemort's wand. And it's been said it's far more difficult using another Wizard's wand, and a lot of times nothing happens, this proves his abilities to me. Also, he was able to perform the curse that killed all of those Muggles. That, I believe, must have taken some skill. He was also able to became an animagus, yes he needed help, but he still did it successfully while others could not. Many times he showed resourcefulness as well. Such as going into hiding after he murdered all of the Muggles. He transformed into his animagus form, and went looking for Voldemort. He also found his way to the Weasley’s and became their pet rat ‘Scabbers’. Being a rat enabled him to eavesdrop on conversations and feed that information to Lord Voldemort. It was a good plan.

The future

Peter Pettigrew has been very much underestimated in my opinion. He’s done things that were never expected of him. I feel that he is a very important part of the story. As I mentioned earlier without him Voldemort wouldn’t have returned or gained knowledge he needed. He’s more important than he’s lead on to be and strong as well. He’s resourceful, and has an unorthodox way of getting the jobs done. He’s willing to do anything to get what he wants/needs. He’s also fairly patient, and you need patience to achieve anything. Anything worth having, is worth waiting for. I also have a feeling his new silver hand will come in handy (no pun intended) I feel it will particularly come in handy with a certain werewolf since silver is used to kill werewolves and all.

He is short, has a rat-like face, which is understandable, had a missing finger for thirteen years, but gained the silver hand from Voldemort. He has a pointed nose, small and watery eyes, I suppose that of a rat’s. His hair is thin, colorless, unkempt and he has a bald patch. Though he used to be mousy-haired when he was younger. He’s small, pretty close in height with Harry and Hermione, he’s been described as fat. His complexion is pasty.

Rats are pretty misunderstood creatures. Being a rat owner I’ve experienced this first hand. A lot of people automatically see them as dirty, nasty, mean creatures. Which they are not. They’re actually very friendly. I’d say the most friendly out of the rodent family. There are also stereotypes as in the word rat meaning a sneak. Which is also giving them a bad reputation. Rats are loving creatures, but because of their short life spans, they will do anything to survive, they can be a bit greedy. Which is sort of like Peter Pettigrew. He was willing to sacrifice his friends lives in exchange for surviving. Rats, do show compassion for eachother though, but in the very end they will do what it takes to survive. Peter's animugus is a rat because his peronaility traits are very similar to that of a rat's. Just as Sirius's are of a dog. (Extreme loyalty) But I do believe there’s more to Peter than the typical rat stereotypes.

Final thoughts

I enjoy Peter Pettigrew’s determination and the way he’s willing to do anything to get what he needs/wants. I find him to be a very interesting character, who has a very unique background. He also has tons of information from many different sources. He’s spent a great deal of time in Hogwarts, in the Weasley House, with Voldemort, and traveling around everywhere. He knows a lot more than people might think he does. He’s a very important character and a favorite of mine.
